Vineweevil
- Pest type - Insect
- Infects - Foliage,
- Host plants- Hydrangea, Hosta, Arum, Fuchsia, Other, Non-specific,
- Symptoms- Holes in leaf edge:
Vine weevils are small nocturnal beetle-like creatures that have become the scourge of many gardeners. These weevils emerge from about the end of April and remain active until the cooler weather sets in at the end of September.
Although unable to fly, this creature of the night is a remarkably good climber and will reach tubs, windowboxes and hanging baskets even at the top of blocks of flats. The weevils eat small notches from the perimiter of leaves which while not doing any significant harm, does spoil the appearance of good foliage plants.
What makes this insect a serious pest is the grubs or larve which live in the compost or soil eating the roots of small plants, usually killing them. This menace usually goes unnoticed until too late as the dead plants are usually the first notice the gardener gets of their existance.
See 'Vine weevil grubs' for remedy.
