Leafcutter Bee

  • Pest type - Insect
  • Infects -  Foliage,
  • Host plants-  Rose, Leycesteria, Amalanchier, Other,
  • Symptoms-  Holes in leaf edge:

Damage caused by leaf cutter beeLeaves of selected plants will suddenly aquire large but neat holes cut in the margins with no apparent cause evident. The culprit is one of several different species of leaf cutter bees that cut away neat pieces of foliage to line a tunnel and make cells for the young. The reason you never see the bee in action is because the bee flies in, selects a suitable leaf, cuts the piece to measure, rolls it up and flies away in about 6 seconds.

Unless the damage is severe, it is probably best if just lived with as no significant harm is done. Plants most often affected are Roses, Amalanchier and Leycesteria, but many others are likely to be chosen if available.
