Cabbage moth caterpillar
- Pest type - Insect larve
- Infects - Roots, Flowers, Foliage,
- Host plants- Grass roots, Polyanthus flowers, Pot plants, Non-specific,
- Symptoms- Petals eaten:
This fairly large caterpillar is a master of disguise and is rarely seen. It can be present in the garden at almost any time of the year, usually hiding in the lawn. It does eat the leaves of choice plants but seems addicted to the flowers of primroses and polyanthus. The usually solitary caterpillar will decimate these flowers overnight by eating the opening buds, safe in the knowledge that the gardener will blame the sparrows. (These are not without some guilt).
The caterpillar appears sluggish but is highly mobile when it needs to move, and rarely rests where it is eating. No easy cure is available and the damage, while annoying, is rarely significant. Potted plants can be checked over if its presence is suspected, and the offender removed by hand if found.
