Black aphid
- Pest type - Insect
- Infects - Foliage,
- Host plants- Dahlia, Pea, Bean, Other,
- Symptoms- Masses of black flies on leaves and shoot tips:
Aphids are small sap-sucking insects that can build up into large colonies in a very short space of time. There are many different varieties that the gardener tends to identify by their colour. Black aphis tend to be most prolific during the spring and early summer months, but local populations can flare up at most times of the growing season.
Plants most affected by these aphids are beans, Dahlia, Hydrangea and sometimes ornamental plants such as Acer.
If left alone, nature usually evens up the balance as these insects have many predators. Spraying with insecticide will get a bad infestation under control, but this can also kill the beneficial insects.
As these aphids are often placed on your plants by ants, iinfestations can flare up without any warning.
