Anemones are mostly plants growing from small corms but others, particularly A.japonica produces a fleshy rootstock.
Little care is required for the small spring-flowering plants as they will die away naturally during the summer. For the taller-growing japonica types that flower in the late summer, these should be cut down and cleared of all top growth during the general tidy-up sessions in late autumn. Top dress the crowns with manure or compost at this time and leave them to it. In exposed situations, the flower stems may require support. Plants can outgrow their welcome if allowed to creep into paths or other similar areas.
No toxic, culinary or medicinal properties known.

Anemone japonica produces a number of tough leathery leaves from a rootstock from late spring into the summer. The flower stems arise in late summer and grow to a height of between 40cm - 80cm before the 3cm dia flowers emerge in colours of pink or white. Stems are strong for their size and a succession of blooms continue until cold weather sets in.
