The flowers of Alstromeria are similar to lilies although much smaller. The plants also tend to be quite small compared to lilies. These plants grow annually from a tuber and can make large groups after a few years. The hybrid varieties most often seen for sale in garden centres are fully hardy and require very little attention once planted. The flowering season is quite long and good clumps will remain in flower for most of the summer.
Take a little care when planting as the tubers are easily damaged. Most are bought as potted plants these days so there is less risk of damage, but they should still be treated with respect. Once autumn arrives, cut the plants down to ground level. Mark their position to prevent them being accidentally dug up when cultivating the flowerbeds, otherwise they may be destroyed.
Tubers can be cooked and eaten, but check the price first.
