Choisya is an evergreen bush, fairly slow growing in its early years, that produces a main flush of white flowers in the spring, with secondary flushes throughout the summer. The foliage is fragrant when brushed against and for this reason, it is often planted adjacent to walkways. Plants have a reputation for being tender, but generally, they will tolerate both neglect and frost. Bushes respond well to regular clipping and can be shaped to keep small.
During the winter months cut away any low growing branches that may touch the ground and root down. Mulch the root area with compost or manure and feed with a slow acting fertilizer. No pruning is required for this shrub unless it has grown too large for the situation, or you wish to keep it as a more formal shaped bush. To keep a nice shape, trim regularly with shears during the growing period. Little and often is best. If the plant has grown excessively large, cut it back in early summer to a nice skeleton of branches. These will re-sprout within a few weeks and soon return to a nice leafy plant.
