Bamboos come in a large variety that range from dwarf types growing less than 30cm tall, to the giants many metres high. Usually, the leaves are a plain colour of green varying from yellow-green to blue-green depending on variety, but some have variegated foliage. Others have brightly coloured stems that may be yellow, red, orange, green or even black. Most are extremely hardy and provide evergreen shelter or screening of ugly objects but can be used as focus points in a larger garden. Some can become invasive, and these should be planted within a strong walled bottomless container to prevent their escape.
The dead leaves littered on the ground make the garden look untidy so these will require gathering up at regular intervals to prevent them gradually getting blown all over the garden. Any dead shoots should be cut away once or twice a year. During the winter months, give a generous feed with slow acting fertilizers as this plant can deplete the soil nutrients to a low level. In summer, ensure that the plant has sufficient water during dry spells. Keep a watchful eye on the spread as the larger varieties may move more than a metre in a summer. Cut off and dig out any runners that are unwanted.
