Family description Buddleia.

The butterfly bushes; are deciduous to semi-evergreen shrubs with a weeping form. Butterfly bushes have opposite, 5"-11", lance-shaped grey-green leaves on long arching arms. The small flowers are irresistible to some butterflies. They are formed in long 8"-18" cones that droop in a profusion of colour and stay busy with an array of winged, and nectar feeding insects, from late spring until the first frosts of autumn.

The flowers can be so profuse and heavy, that they cause the branches to arch even more sometimes. The flowers of many varieties are of a sweet fragrance. Flower colours may be white, pink, red, or purple, and they usually have an orange centre. There are many selections to choose from. 'African Queen' has dark purple flowers. 'Nanho Blue' or 'Petite Indigo' is compact and smaller, 4'-5' tall and has 4"- 6" clusters of blue-lavender flowers. 'Nanho Purple' and 'Nanho White' are also smaller compact plants. 'Royal Red' has flowers of dark red purple. 'White Bouquet' has white flowers with orange centres. 'Opera' has pink flowers.

General care.

Remove dead flowers as soon as flowering has finished. At this time also remove any thin branches and reduce any branches overhanging paths etc.

During early spring, cut back last years branches to within a few inches of previous growth.

Give the plant a helping feed of slow acting fertilizer such as bone meal and top dress with manure.

Species description. Buddleia davidii.

Buddleia davidii typically grows as a rounded bush to 2-3 mtrs in height and width. Requires ruthless pruning in autumn-spring each year to prevent bush growing out of control. It can become a small tree if ignored for a few years.

Blooms are bourne at the ends of the long new shoots of the current years growth causing the stems to arch over. The blooms are composed of many hundreds of small lightly perfumed flowers packed into a cone-shaped inflorescence and allways attracts myriads of insects including the more colourfull of the English butterflies.
