Cimicifuga is not very common and you may have to hunt around before you find a Garden Centre with them in stock. The plant produces a large mound of leaves from which the tall flower stems arise in the autumn producing the plumes of white flowers. This plant belongs in a woodland setting, where it receives shelter from both wind and strong afternoon sunshine. A moist and fertile area is required to grow this plant well and bear in mind that some varieties will get more than 2 metres tall.
Provide the plants basic needs at planting time and Cimicifuga will give trouble-free flowering for many years. supply plenty of manure or compost in the ground when planting, and top dress annually. Once flowering has finished, cut the plant to ground level for the winter. Apply bone meal or similar slow acting fertilizer along with the annual top dressing. When flower stems begin to grow, these will require suitable staking to ensure the flowers remain erect. Water during dry spells.
Plant has medicinal uses but extreme caution is advised.
