The Acer's are a very large and diverse group of deciduous trees ranging from very slow growing plants that are quite happy in patio pots for decades, to rapid growing sycamore trees that would be at home in any forest. Most of these trees have insignificant flowers, and we grow them for the leaf or bark colour, or their stature. while some of the larger specimens work well in the larger garden, I am concentrating more on the smaller varieties.
No special care is required to look after these plants. Those planted in the garden will cope with most conditions once established, but any in pots will require watering during hot spells. Aphids and scale insects are the worst trouble makers to watch for, but while they can mar the beauty of a small plant, the larger trees normally shrug them off with ease.
Sap from all Acers can be extracted and converted into syrup (Maple syrup).

Sometimes called Japanese maple these tend to be slow-growing small trees and are widely used in containers on the patio. When planted in the ground, they do eventually make a modest tree for the larger garden.
