Sadly, these lovely flowers have fallen out of fashion lately, mostly due to large Garden Centres dictating that we buy more profitable items, but also gardeners have become lazy and no longer bother to prepare flowerbeds in the autumn. Singly, wallflowers are a straggly untidy plant, but when planted massed together in a bed mixed with spring bulbs, they really pay for their keep. Technically, they are perennial, but are best grown as a biennial. If you do not have the space to grow them from seed, buy the plants bare-rooted in October and plant out in sheltered beds.
After planting, pinch out the tops of the plant to encourage it to bush out. Feed well with manure or fertilizer and watch them grow. Apart from keeping the beds free from weeds, there is not much else they require. Wallflowers are not in the garden long enough to get any serious pest or disease problems.
No toxic, culinary or medicinal properties known.

An old cottage garden favorite and frequently used in parks for massed spring bedding mixed with tulips. Grows best in a warm sunny situation. May be grown as a perennial but the plant soon gets leggy and untidy.
