The majority of buxus are tropical and all are evergreen shrubs or small trees with small leaved foliage. Only the Common European box Buxus sempervirens is of great interest to the gardener due to its ability to be clipped into fine shapes.
If grown as topiary, regular trimming will be required. When grown in containers beside doorways ensure that they get regular watering as there is a growing trend these days to have one green one and one brown one.
No toxic, culinary or medicinal properties known.

Very slow-growing with close branches and fine evergreen leaves make this shrub ideal for containers and topiary work. It is also frequently used as a very low hedge to create knot gardens.
