Begonia are a very large genus of plants with quite diverse growing habits. Of most interest to the gardener are the fibrous rooted semperflorens bedding plants, tuberous begonias for the superb flowers, and the rex types grown as houseplants for the exotic foliage.
None of the Begonias are truely hardy although the fibrous rooted types sometimes overwinter. Many are grown just for the single summer display then discarded. All require plenty of water when in growth and protection from strong wind.
No toxic, culinary or medicinal properties known.

The semperflorens Begonias are mostly grown as summer bedding plants although they are perennial if dug up and brought under cover. Flowers are lots smaller than the tuberous types but make up for this with quantity. Foliage colours vary from light green to reddish brown and is attractive in its own right.
