Begonia are a very large genus of plants with quite diverse growing habits. Of most interest to the gardener are the fibrous rooted semperflorens bedding plants, tuberous begonias for the superb flowers, and the rex types grown as houseplants for the exotic foliage.
None of the Begonias are truely hardy although the fibrous rooted types sometimes overwinter. Many are grown just for the single summer display then discarded. All require plenty of water when in growth and protection from strong wind.
No toxic, culinary or medicinal properties known.

So many hybrids and cultivars exist now even the botanistas are not sure of the heritage of most of these plants. Plants are dormant for the winter months as a tuber which requires bringing into growth in early spring. When in growth tuberous Begonias require plenty of feed and constantly moist soil. Plants can become top heavy and are easily damaged so do well in heavy containers.
