The genus contains quite a number of mostly evergreen shrubs and trees but mainly for garden use there is Elaeagnus pungens and cultivars.
Elaeagnus can be used as a specimen plant in the border or containers, or used as a hedge. After planting, little attention is required until plants grow too large. To keep size in bounds periodically trim long shoots with shears.
Fruit can be eaten raw or cooked but the energy required for harvest may outdo the nutrition received.

Mature leaves of this species have large yellow centres with green borders making them an attractive plant throughout the year. Grows well in shady situations and tolerates pollution and sea air. Small flowers appear in November and are strongly perfumed.
