Abelia is an evergreen bush with a neat habit growing to about 2 metres high and wide. The small leaves are light-green and glossy with a reddish sheen. The flowers are miniature bells in white or pink and are produced during the summer months. Unfortunately, this plant is not entirely hardy, and can sustain frost damage to the stems during a hard winter. It is best to position this plant in a sheltered and sunny position.
When flowering has finished, the bush may be lightly trimmed with shears to maintain a neat outline. If the plant suffers damage during a severe winter, the dead branches should be cut away in the spring. Plants normally recover, but sometimes they give way and free up the border for new plants.
No toxic, culinary or medicinal properties known.
