Family description Clematis.

Clematis are a large family of twining climbers that are varied in flowering season and vigour. Some are evergreen, but most are deciduous, and the hybrids usually have extremely large and showy flowers. The spring flowering Clematis comprise of the evergreen C. armandii and the deciduous C. montana, both of which flower in one glorious flush of flowers. Once established, the above varieties can become extremely vigorous and ruthless control may become necessary. Many of the summer flowering types have large highly coloured flowers, and the flowering period is far greater, lasting from June up to September. Two other species Clematis worth a note are C. tangutica, producing small bell-shaped flowers in yellow or blue, and C. alpina, with small starry blooms.

General care.

Always remember when planting a Clematis: Head in the sun, feet in the shade. to get a good display of flowers, the foliage must be in the sun, but the roots prefer cool shady soil. If the entire border is sunny, plant some small shrubs nearby to give the roots the shady conditions required. Once the spring varieties have finished flowering for the season, cut back all surplus growth, otherwise they tend to become a giant ball crushing everything nearby. check for any escaping shoots, and curtail the spread of any with aspirations of climbing any nearby trees. The summer-flowering varieties require a similar, but lighter treatment in early spring. Any that have had the top growth completely killed off by frosts should be cut down close to the soil level then new shoots will probably replace the ones lost. Bear in mind though, that Clematis tends to look dead in the absence of foliage so do check for emergent buds high on the vines. All Clematis will appreciate a thick mulch of manure or compost during the winter months. Spread this over the entire bed as part of normal winter maintenance.
