Crataegus is better known as Hawthorn, Quickthorn or May and may be grown as a small tree, a medium bush or as a secure stock proof hedge. The branches carry a nasty set of thorns beneath the soft leaves and care is required when pruning. For this reason, Hawthorn is most often seen as a robust hedge, particularly where houses are adjacent to farmland. Flowers come in white or reddish pink, and a mature standard tree is a very pretty sight at flowering time. If left unpruned, the flowers will be followed in the autumn by the red fruits called haws. These are attractive at a dull time of the year, and are a staple winter food for many native songbirds.
Hedges should be trimmed regularly during the summer months to keep the neat shape. If cut before the new wood hardens, there will be fewer tears when collecting the thorns afterwards. As with most shrubs, a feed of slow acting fertilizer in early spring will be rewarded later in the summer.
Fruit can be eaten raw or cooked or made into jam. Leaves used as substitute for tea.
