The genus of Abutilon is quite a varied group of mostly small shrubs, some hardy others tender, some evergreen, some deciduous. Best known as an indoor plant and in a conservatory, they can get quite large and flower almost non-stop. For garden use, the Abutilon makes a nice pot plant for colour on the patio, and they were once commonly used as dot plants in large bedding schemes to provide extra height to the displays.
Tender varieties must be brought into a suitably warm situation for the winter months or treated as an annual and discarded. Long branches can be freely pruned to encourage neater bushes and ensure potted plants always get sufficient water. Aphids: - Spider mites: - and Scale insects are common pests and a watchful eye should be kept for the first signs of any outbreaks of these bugs.
No toxic, culinary or medicinal properties known.
