Alliums are in fact onions not dissimilar to the kitchen varieties, but I urge you not to eat them. (Far too expensive). These ornamental bulbs come in a wide variety of heights, colours and flower styles. Most produce a large ball of flowers in early summer. The flower heads last for many weeks before the colours begin to fade, but even then, they still look attractive as they dry. If the flower stems are cut and dried, they can be used indoors in everlasting flower decorations.
Plant new bulbs in the early autumn where they are to flower. Previously flowered bulbs should have the foliage cut away once the leaves have withered. Allium bulbs appreciate a good feed in early spring to give them a head start. Tall varieties may require some form of support. Allium bulbs are for sale in my on-line store during the autumn months.
Good chopped up in a cheese sandwich.

Better known as chives and used extensively as a herb or garnish, but is nethertheless an attractive flowering plant.
