Convallaria (Lily of the Valley) is low growing ground cover plant famous for its exquisitely perfumed bell-shaped flowers that appear in spring. The plant grows from thin spreading roots that form small crowns at regular intervals along their length, called pips. From these pips the flower stem arises, followed soon after by two leaves.
Little care is required by this ground-cover plant. Cut off all foliage in the autumn, remove any weeds from the area, and top dress with manure or garden compost.
Used in herbal medicine but dosages can be critical. If you have a heart problem, visit a heart doctor or get a lover. Extracts from the flowers are used in the perfume industry, and green and yellow dyes are obtained from the leaves.
