Astilbe is a moisture loving herbaceous perennial producing vivid coloured massed spikes of tiny flowers in summer. The ferny dark-green foliage remains neat and tidy until the autumn causes the entire top growth to die.
Remove flower spikes after flowering has finished, and cut the entire plant to ground level in the autumn. during the winter months, mulch the entire area with garden compost or manure, and feed with slow acting fertilizer. When the plants are actively growing, ensure that they never get dry at the roots otherwise the flowers may fail.
No toxic, culinary or medicinal properties known.
