Dicentra is a herbaceous plant that grows best in a woodland or semi-shaded area of the garden. The plant stems are not strong enough to support themselves and normally lean on adjacent foliage. During May-June time, the flowers appear, looking like rows of hearts hanging on a line.
Provide suitable support as the new shoots emerge in the spring to prevent the plant falling over. Shortly after the flowering has finished, the foliage will start to turn yellow, wither and die. This is normal and should be cleared away leaving the area clean for the summer flowers. Mark the spot with a cane to remind yourself that the roots are still there. During winter, while the roots are dormant, mulch the area with manure or compost.
No toxic, culinary or medicinal properties known.
