While the edible pomegranate grows to quite a large size, Punica nana remains a small and neat bush. The plant has small glossy leaves, and very strange looking red flowers are produced constantly throughout the summer months. In a good summer, these flowers are accompanied by miniature pomegranate fruits which add to the attraction. These plants are not completely hardy, and protection should be given in colder areas. Older plants seem to tolerate several degrees of frost, but branches can die back. Punica nana grows well in pot culture, and provides a point of interest on the patio. The fruit is too small to consider eating though.
Remove any dead branches in late spring after the new growth has emerged, to keep the appearance neat. Pot grown specimens will require adequate watering and feeding during the growing months.
No toxic, culinary or medicinal properties known.
